Homebuyers usually evaluate a property from their own perspective. They consider the commute, parking, layout, yard, and nearby amenities. But there is another perspective worth considering: the person trying to find and access your house for the first time. Thinking like a delivery driver can uncover practical issues that may otherwise go unnoticed during a showing.
Is the House Easy to Find?
Some addresses are surprisingly difficult to locate.
House numbers may be small, poorly illuminated, hidden behind landscaping, or positioned where they cannot easily be seen from the street. Homes located down shared drives, private roads, or unusually configured developments can create additional confusion.
That inconvenience may seem minor until it affects food deliveries, packages, service appointments, or emergency access.
Look at the Path to the Door
Consider how someone reaches the entrance.
Are there steep stairs, an unusually long walkway, a difficult gate, or a driveway that is challenging to navigate? Is the front door obvious, or would a visitor naturally walk toward a side or garage entrance instead?
Think about nighttime access as well. Exterior lighting can make a significant difference when guests or service providers arrive after dark.
Consider Where Packages Will Go
Online shopping has made package delivery part of everyday homeownership.
Look at whether the front entrance provides a reasonably protected location for deliveries. A deep porch may offer shelter from weather, while an exposed doorstep may leave packages highly visible from the street.
Gated communities, secured condo buildings, and properties with long private drives may have completely different delivery procedures worth understanding before buying.
Do Not Forget Large Deliveries
Eventually, you may need something bigger than a package delivered.
Furniture, appliances, construction materials, moving trucks, and service vehicles require considerably more access. A narrow driveway, tight turn, low overhang, steep grade, or limited street parking can make those deliveries more complicated.
None of these issues necessarily make a home undesirable. They simply affect how the property functions.
When touring a home, imagine arriving there without already knowing exactly where to go. If finding the address, parking, reaching the entrance, or leaving a package requires explanation, it is worth noticing.
Your delivery driver may only spend a few minutes at your house, but looking at the property from that perspective can reveal practical details you could deal with for years.
